What are WBL Types?

WBL Types are the work-based learning strategies used to provide students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills to develop their employability. WBL Types typically focus on career awareness, career exploration, career planning, and/or helping students attain employable skills.

You can create as many WBL types as you like. As they are added, a new tab will appear for each. Some commonly used types include Cooperative Education, Apprenticeships, Internships, Externships, Job Shadows, Field Trips, and Guest Speakers.

How are WBL Types created?

To create new WBL types, follow the steps below. For an illustrated guide, see the attachment below titled "Creating WBL Types".

  1. Select "Settings" from the WBL main page. This will display multiple options including "WBL Types". By selecting "WBL Types", all current WBL types for your organization will be displayed. You may edit or delete any of the current WBL types or create new ones.

  1. Select "New".

  1. Provide a name and brief description for your new WBL Type. The description you specify will be shown to potential employer partners on the Employer Registration page.

Ex. Name - Cooperative Education, Description - Students earn credit while being employed and paid in a position directly aligned to a CTE program.

  1. Select "Student Based", "Project Based", or "Event". "Student Based" should be selected for any activity that would be geared directly to individual students and that will likely require a paper trail. This includes Cooperative Education, Internships, Apprenticeships, Job Shadows, etc. "Event" should be selected for stand-alone activities geared to groups of students and that will likely not require a paper trail. This would include field trips, guest speakers, etc.

If the WBL Type is "Student Based", you will be provided the option to assign forms relative to the activity. This includes Enrollment Forms, Recurring Forms, Completion Forms, Work Log Signature Page, Required Employer Clearances, Required Employer Forms, Required Student Documents, and Required Weekly Hours. Forms selected will then be available for use with the new WBL Type created.

  • Enrollment Forms - Organization's required documents submitted prior to beginning WBL experience.

  • Filter Enrollment Forms by Pathway - Checking this box will filter the list of enrollment forms required by the student based on the student/forms cluster and pathway.

  • Recurring Forms - Documents that are completed repeatedly throughout WBL experience. Requires frequency.

  • Filter Recurring Forms by Pathway - Checking this box will filter the list of recurring forms required by the student based on the student/forms cluster and pathway.

  • Completion Forms - General documents that may be needed at some point during WBL experience.

  • Filter Completion Forms by Pathway - Checking this box will filter the list of completion forms required by the student based on the student/forms cluster and pathway.

  • Work Log Signature Page - Document used to confirm student participation in WBL as assigned.

  • Required Employer Clearances - Child Abuse, Criminal History, etc.

  • Required Student Documents - Driver's License, Insurance, etc.

  • Required Weekly Hours - Optional setting.

  1. Select "Add WBL Type".
