What's the purpose of having an employer in as a lead?

There may be times when you want to log that you spoke with an employer or that you are trying to culture a relationship with an employer but you're not quite ready for them to be in your bank of available employers. In this case, you would mark the employer as "Is Lead" when creating the record. This option will prevent the employer from actually being used anywhere in the app but still gives you the ability the keep notes about your conversations with that employer so you can eventually list the employer as an actual partner of the school.
